What did girls and women look like in ancient China?

Generally  , we regard that ancient lives of girls or
women wouldn't be so liberal than modern time.
However , many a text revealed that they could do
whatever they wanted to do, and be who they would
like to be. They were brave and wits, skillful and
responsible , thoughtful and creative.  Was it an
imagination of a writer ?  Maybe they were truely in
ancient China lives.
