Baby Carrier: Chinese Amah carried foreigner's baby on her back in concessions,1840s~1940s
1845~1947,西方列強為了打開中國市場,藉由戰爭在中國設立十多個租界,外國人陸續移民中國工作生活,這帶給封建中國的老百姓從未有過的百年衝擊,也激發了在夾縫中求生存的生命力,各種糊口的新機會應運而生, 在租界的揹娃人Amah 就是一例。
1845~1947, in order to open up the Chinese market, the western countries conquered China to establish concessions in China. Foreigners immigrated to China continuously. This brought feudal China huge impact. However, it inspired Chinese vitality of survival. All kinds of new opportunities for subsistence came into being, such as Amah.

Chinese women used to carry baby on their backs
So that they were able to work effectively. 
Raising baby needed a baby carrier.
During wars, it's more useful to carry baby away from disasters.
Carrying a baby on her back, holding another child, and bringing a kid. 
It’s the image of that era.
In such a hopeless world, the baby on mom's back was the hope.
One more baby, one more hope
A few years later, the baby on mom’s back became a child who carried baby on the back.
No matter of being as an elder sister or brother, 
carried baby on her/his back was the childhood.
Professional Amah carried foreigner’s baby on her back
mid 19th Centurymid 20th Century
Chinese women were hired as babysitters / home maids by foreigners in concessions.
western people called them Amah

Amah carried foreigner's baby on her back with her own baby carrier.
Thus, the foreigner's baby also became a child who grow up on Amah’s back
Amah were so capable that they could do babysitting and housekeeping at the same time.
That’s why Amah were so competitive in foreigner society of China, Hong Kong and Singapore.
